League Proposes Consolidation Task Force

The Salina League of Women Voters would like to continue the discussion of consolidation issues for Salina and Saline County. Monday they told the City Commission they would like a task force to be formed to continue the study.

The City voiced support of the idea, but some had concerns that County Commissioners might not, like Commissioner John Vanier. He said "it takes two to dance and the girl we want to take to the dance doesn't want to go with us sometimes." The League had approached the County to have a similar meeting but had not been scheduled at that point.

Commissioner Debbie Divine was in favor of staff working on a resolution of support for the task force. Mayor Donnie Marrs says he wasn't opposed to that idea. But he said letting the League approach the County "is the best avenue, but if you run into a dead end come back." Marrs suggested if both governing bodies could not be a part of the task force maybe they should continue on with a citizen group.

The League said they were more in favor of having the support of one governmental agency than none at all. If the task force is created it is recommended to comprise a diverse group of people that would study the issue for at least a year.
