League of Women Voters
of Salina, Kansas

KSAL radio news (9/25/2006)

Saline County Commissioners will give formal consideration next week to a request from the Salina League of Women Voters to discuss formation of a joint task force with the City of Salina to study consolidation issues. The League presented information to the County on Monday. The City met with them last week and gave consensus that they would be willing to be a part of the task force.

Saline County Commissioner Craig Stephenson says he has not seen consolidation as a "burning issue" and both governmental bodies have been working together already. He says, "I think that all commissioners, both City and County, have discussed the fact that they are supportive of working together in cooperation mode. We feel that is an easier street to go down and one that has been used well in the community in the past." League President Gina McDonald says whatever the task force would come up with would be "visionary" and more of a plan for the future than a reaction to problems that arise.

Commissioner Sherri Barragree says she sees the issue as an educational one, because most people do not understand the different roles each governmental body has to play. If both the City and County wish to participate in a task force they will likely discuss it at their joint meeting next month.
