Issues: NATURAL RESOURCES

Parks and Recreation

The LWV of Salina supports a consolidation of parks and recreation departments with adequate financing for the programs; facilities planning policies to provide for acquisition and development of adequate park land, a linear Smoky Hill River Park and a city bikeway system.

Solid Waste

The LWV of Salina supports:
  1. A properly engineered sanitary landfill, complying with state and federal guidelines, with cost of disposal distributed among its users by taxes and appropriate users fees;
  2. Ordinances for solid waste storage being strictly and quickly enforced;
  3. More public education about solid waste generation;
  4. Protection of our natural resources;
  5. Encouraging separation of recyclable resources at the local level.

Land Use

The LWV of Salina supports zoning policies for Salina and Saline County which provide for:
  1. Protection of private property rights and values, consistent with the public good;
  2. Overall consideration of public health, safety and welfare;
  3. Maintaining and improving the quality of existing areas;
  4. Orderly growth while maintaining the unique flavor of the community;
  5. Conservation of land resources;
  6. Consideration of adequate light, air and open space and wise use of energy;7. A variety of adequate housing for all socio-economic groups;
  7. Alleviation of traffic congestion (i.e. frontage and access roads, off-street parking, etc.);
  8. Consideration of population density;
  9. Suitable enforcement and appeal procedures.
The League of Women Voters supports the concept of:
  1. A professional planning department, adequately staffed and financed;
  2. Planning Commissions which represent a cross section of the Community and which minimize conflict of interest;
  3. Public participation in all stages of the decision making process and accessible to public records;
  4. Inter-governmental cooperation.
The league of Women Voters of Salina believes all citizens have a responsibility to:
  1. Become informed;
  2. Express their views to the appropriate level of government,
  3. Be willing to support and finance implementation of good zoning and planning.
