Salina league lauded for program

Salina Journal May 19, 2007

The Salina League of Women Voters is one of a few of the nation’s 850 state and local affiliates to be mentioned in a new national publication about government transparency.

In the League publication “Observing Your Government in Action: Protecting Your Right to Know,” the Salina group was cited for its observer program, which consists of having members regularly attend governmental meetings.

“League members volunteer to observe government meetings to help strengthen our community,” local president Mary Anne Powell said, “and we hope that our experience can now inspire other civic leaders.”

In a section of the publication called “Sharing What is Observed,” Salina observer chair Kaye Crawford described how League members get together twice a year to share their observations from governmental meetings.
